As reported by BBC News, Russia launched a major aerial attack last evening against the people of Ukraine in the capital city of Kyiv. At least 14 people were reported to have been injured in this latest Russian attack, city authorities stated.
What makes this event disturbing is that each side had been actively engaged in cease fire negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey. As of last Friday, Ukraine and Russia had each handed over 390 soldiers and civilians in the biggest prisoner exchange since Russia launched its full-scale assault in February 2022.
It seems the reason for this latest Russian attack was retaliatory. Russia’s Ministry of Defence said Ukraine had launched hundreds of exploding drones early last week at their country, including strikes over Moscow.
In Turkey, negotiators from both sides, who had earlier agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners apiece, were all but preparing for another prisoner swap on Sunday. One should be convinced that many in Ukraine are questioning Russia’s resolve in committing to a formal ceasefire agreement.
But no worries. President Trump can fix this and nip it in the bud.
After all, here in the United States, who doesn’t recall the veracity of Donald Trump’s presidential claims of how he would handle the war in Ukraine. Donald Trump said that, if he were elected president again, he would end the Russia–Ukraine war “in one day.” He even chimed in one interview: “That deal would be easy.” Of course, he never divulged how he would do it. It was to be assumed by the minions that his level of negotiating skills were benevolent and should be reveled with awe.
After all, he authored a bestselling book, called the “The Art of the Deal”. Though it was entirely ghostwritten and largely embellished, Trump has always used this book as a self-indulging badge of validation.
To Donald Trump, this was an accreditation of his deal-making prowess. This was a testament of his hard earned street creds in the realms of international diplomacy.
As our 45th President, we languished through a failed renegotiation of the original Iran nuclear deal which ended up with the Iranians foregoing the agreement and return to resume enriching uranium. Then there were tariffs set against China before a G7 summit which ended up with a backpedal. To top it off, Trump insisted his affections toward North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-un and the “beautiful letters” he received, were evidence of his ability to amass peace in the region.
President Trump’s term ended with Kim Jung-un only building up his nuclear program and feverishly test firing more ballistic missiles.
Asked about his tendency to veer back and forth, Trump once replied, “It’s the way I negotiate. It’s done very well for me over the years, and it’s doing even better for the country.”
This played well for Trump when he was a real estate tycoon who boosted profits by bilking suppliers and evading debt by declaring multiple bankruptcies but such ploys rarely succeed in the complex arena of international politics.
Let’s face it, America. You can’t put lipstick on a pig and call it “Wonder Woman”.
And now we are supposed to believe that Trump and his administrative cronies have the diplomatic clout capable of stifling Russia’s egregious war against the people of Ukraine?
If history has taught our adversaries anything, it is that they only need to placate him with a warm letter and sit quietly by as his outlandish grandstanding wears off. After that, then they can go about their business as usual.
